Joseph Mitchell, a rising Senior studying Computer Science at Boston University, reflects on his summer at Matrix Applications as a Financial Applications Development Intern.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

One of the best parts about working at Matrix Applications is the people. It doesn’t matter who I worked with or who I talked to;Joe everyone was kind, welcoming and made me feel heard. The work environment was supportive and collaborative. If I had a question or a problem, everyone on the team was more than willing to lend a helping hand. Matrix provided a more than suitable environment for me to learn and grow my abilities as a software engineer.

Who did you work with? Tell us about your mentorship experience?

I worked closely with the Software Development team, mainly receiving instruction from Jason Walsh, Vice President of Software Engineering, and Nolan Bay, Systems Engineer. I learned a lot about application development and important concepts like simplistic user interface design, database integration and containerization. I also gained tons of experience in collaboration through working closely with Rohan Parikh, a fellow Intern, as we shared ideas with each other and worked in the same repository environment. I learned so much about how to contribute to an actual development pipeline, and I can't thank everyone on the team enough for supporting me along the way.

What was one of the most valuable projects you worked on?

The most valuable project I worked on was definitely the full-stack dataload deployer. I helped design and implement both the front-end user interface and the back-end structure to an application that consolidates many different build tools into a single website that Matrix employees can use to deploy various different dataloads. I worked closely with many members of the team to make this happen and gained tons of experience in user interface design, framework development, database interaction, and teamwork collaboration.
