Tyler Lam's Internship Experience at Matrix Applications

Hello Matrix Blog Readers,

I am Tyler Lam, a Computer Science student at Northeastern University. As I wrap up my internship at Matrix Applications, I would like to think back on how this experience has shaped my professional journey thus far.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

Pizza Thursdays? Just kidding. It would definitely be the people. I enjoyed having the opportunity to learn about everyone's experiences at the company and hearing about the projects they have worked on, their career journeys, perspectives, and aspects of the company culture that people value most here. The stories and conversations are what I'll remember most for sure.

What was your biggest takeaway?

One thing that I learned through my internship was the importance of just absorbing everything around me. Whether it was the technical side of work, how teams communicated, or the way projects came together. Asking questions, even small ones, not only helped me grow but showed that I was engaged and eager to learn. I discovered how to enjoy the learning process by being present at every possible moment. Shortly after I had started, I realized the simple joy of learning from and connecting with the people around me, which made the experience much more memorable.

How did your mentor and team shape your experience?

I had the opportunity to work with Jason Walsh, Victor Wong and Indraneel Vaka. Jason, as my supervisor, provided valuable guidance and oversight throughout the program, while Indraneel, my intern buddy, helped me navigate the day-to-day and settle in quickly. Among them, Victor has been an incredible mentor throughout my internship. From my very first day he made it clear that I could always come to him with any questions or concerns. He's fostered an environment where my voice is heard and valued, and his support has provided guidance that will stay with me far beyond this internship.

I look forward to bringing all that I have learned as I finish my last year at Northeastern University. This summer has been filled with discoveries and adventures into the world of financial technology.

Thanks for reading,

Tyler is the kind of person who reminds you why mentorship matters. He didn’t just grow. He transformed. In a matter of weeks, he went from a curious intern to a confident developer who could hold his own in technical discussions, present with clarity under pressure, and build systems that were both elegant and secure. And what unfolded over the weeks was nothing short of remarkable. Tyler dove into the world of AI chatbot development with courage and precision. He mastered technologies he had never touched before— Rasa, LLMs, NLU— and didn’t just understand them, he made them understandable to others. More than that, Tyler brought integrity, thoughtfulness, and leadership that lifted everyone around him.
His journey wasn’t just about mastering code: it was about mastering communication, collaboration, and the art of learning itself. Tyler’s presence made our team better, and his future is one I’ll be watching with pride. If this internship was a glimpse into what he’s capable of, then the world should be ready—because Tyler is just getting started.
